Background: Navigating adolescent social media use can be a daily issue for many caregivers in Aotearoa New Zealand. However, information about social media in this group is often conflicting and negative and can increase fear in caregivers.

What is the aim of this study? To compare two different messages to communicate with caregivers about the harms and benefits of social media in the lives of adolescents.

Who is the research undertaken by? This study is being undertaken by researchers in the School of Population Health, at the University of Auckland. The survey is funded by the Health Research Council.

How long will the study take? The study will take approximately 10-15 minutes of your time.

Where will the study take place? This study is an online study.

How many people will be recruited into the study? We are looking for around 600 caregivers.

What is involved if I take part? If you are eligible and agree to take part, then completing and submitting the study is taken as consent. You will first be asked to answer some general questions about yourself (for example your age, and gender) and your young person aged 10-19 years. We will then ask you to answer a series of questions that relate to your knowledge and attitudes around social media use and adolescents. After this you will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. You will then be asked to read a passage about adolescents and social media, and you will then need to answer some more questions. At the end of the study, you will go into the monthly draw at Horizon Research to win $1000 cash and an iPad Pro.

Please note:

  • The study is anonymous
  • By submitting your responses you are consenting to participate
  • No IP addresses will be tracked
