More than 40% of middle income New Zealand households plan to spend less

The intention to cut back spending after the Budget is highest among middle-income New Zealand households.

HorizonPoll post-Budget research finds 35% of households say they will spend less as a result of the Budget.

It particularly affects spending intentions among middle income households.

44.2% of households earning between $51,000 and $70,000 per year, and 42% of households earning between $30,001 and $50,000 a year say they will spend less as a result of the Budget.

The intention to spend less is slightly higher (39% v 35%) among  primary household decision makers, and slightly higher 39% among those who are employed  compared with those not in work (29%).

The cut back is particularly high (53%) among two parent families with three or more children at home.

The survey covers 1652 HorizonPoll respondents nationwide between 11.45am Friday May 20 and 7.40am Monday May 23, 2011.

Results are weighted by age, gender, ethnicity, personal income, region and party vote 2008 to provide a nationally representative population sample. The maximum margin of error at the 95% confidence level is +/- 2.4%.
